City Women 10 Island Eagles 0

- 03/01/2010

City's Women's side badly wanted to forget the result of their last game before Christmas - a 10-0 defeat at Haywards Heath - and what better way to do it than by scoring ten themselves in this League Cup first round match at Canterbury High School.

Five goals by Debbie Burgess and some of the most attractive football they had played all season allowed them to control the tie from the beginning. The only fear was that the snow that fell during the second half might cover the lines and cause the game to be called off. Fortunately the worst of the storm skirted the ground.

Burgess took City into an early two goal lead and from then on the result was beyond debate. By half-time the lead had stretched to 3-0. Island Eagles had struggled to get as far as the City penalty area and relied on some brave goalkeeping to keep the score to that level of damage.

Whereas in previous game this season the Women had often played well without reward, here they looked like scoring whenever they went forward. Their teamwork was impressive throughout and should give team manager Mick Santer hope that the league season can be pulled round.
