Reserves move in on runners-up spot

City Reserves 7 Borden Village 2

Needing three points to leapfrog Otford in second place, City Reserves attacked from the first minute of this home fixture at Hersden.

The home side got off to the best of possible starts when on five minutes Ashley Tuite did well to surge forward from midfield and meet a left wing cross with a bullet header that nestled into the roof of the net from eight yards.

City doubled their advantage on the ten minute mark. Renford Tenyue showed great pace out on the left before cutting in and seeing his cross diverted into the back of the net by a Borden defender.

City were dominating but got pegged back on twenty minutes when they failed to clear a corner. The resulting cross was spilled by Hewitt and tapped in by a Borden attacker lurking in the six yard box. Hewitt had the right to protest as he was clearly being impeded before spilling the ball.

Against the run of play Borden had the chance to equalize but Hewitt pulled off a fantastic save, tipping a close range shot on to the crossbar. From the resulting attack City went 3-1 ahead. Luke Read headed on a long ball from the back for Tenyue to race clear and drill in from twelve yards after taking a touch that had forced him out wide.

Tony Jackson made it 4-1 to City on the stroke of half time with a strike from the edge of the area that gave the home side a comfortable lead going into the break.

City came out for the second half and performed as if the game was already won. Borden started to take control of proceedings and on fifty-five minutes scored a deserved second after a twenty five yard strike nestled into the far corner of Hewitt's net.

City were in danger of allowing Borden back into the game but scored a fifth on the hour mark. Dave Silman collected the ball inside his own half and after seeing an opening ran straight through the middle of a high Borden defence before striking the ball past the stranded keeper from eighteen yards.

City's fifth turned the tide of the game back in the home side’s favour and a sixth was to follow on seventy minutes. Read collected the ball from a Chris Wicks’ pass and from thirty yards unleashed a shot with such venom that the Borden keeper could only push the ball into the roof of his own net.

Silman completed the rout, when on eighty minutes he scored City's seventh after pulling away from his marker at the back post to convert an incisive left wing cross from Read. So City Reserves took pole position to claim runners-up spot in their first Kent County League campaign.
