Bonneywell inspires Reserves

University of Kent 0 Canterbury City Reserves 2
The first round of the Challenge Trophy competitions saw City Reserves put on a good performance at the University yesterday. Two First team regular players, Dan Bonneywell and Karl Williams, were released by Dave Fairclough to get a full game under their belts and both worked hard and enjoyed the game. They were placed in the attack and showed they are still strong contenders for First team places.
Bonneywell played exceptionally well and showed his desire to make sure he had a good game. He was always going to be a threat when he got the ball and the chances he had turned into great ones. He got applause from the sideline. Williams did what Williams does best and that was to be a constant nightmare to the defenders and close them down quickly to collect the ball from their unsure passes. Finishing has been a problem for Williams this year and he needed to show that he could turn that around.
City's first goal came on 25 minutes. Dean Brockman's free-kick was sent into the crowded area, with Williams challenging the 'keeper who dropped the ball only for Dave Silman to calmly place home. City continued to threaten the University's goal and outplayed their opponents in many areas.
After the break, City held the University in their half of the pitch for almost the entire time. Danny Wrench had one save to make which on another day and with another referee might have seen him take an early shower. He came out and went to ground to clear the ball but collected the striker at the same time. Luckily the referee saw it differently.
City had chance after chance go to extend their lead. Bonneywell , Justin Macvicar and Jonno Thomsett all went close with long range strikes. Williams pressured and pressured the defence for the next goal and it came on 85 minutes. Williams chased down the defender and won the ball, took a couple of steps and fired in a low drive from 35 yards. And that secured the win for City.
This was the first of five cup games in a row for the Reserves and got the winning start they all wanted so much.
