Oakwood last Saturday were a big, strong, physical team. We all had to be up for it. Spirits were high in the changing room...even Scott and Ben managed to smile for once...they're the miserable ones. We had a brief team talk (at long last) from Dave (thanks Dave). I think he might have got the hint after what I said last week!
It was a great pitch to play on, big, wide and flat. The sort of pitch we've been wanting to play on. Dave had said it might not suit us, having a 4-3-3 but it seemed to work quite well. In the first half there was some good football but it wasn't the greatest we've played. We came in 1-0 up, which was all right. But we should have had more than the one they gave us. I think we realised that we were not going to steamroller over every team we were going to meet this season. We are coming in 1-0 or 1-1 at half-time and we're always thinking we ought to be scoring more.
I don't think we're going to have many easy wins this season but we know that we've got the fitness and the subs to change it second half. It's nice to have that option. They're good players coming on, not like forced substitutions.
Our first two games were a bit too close for comfort but we're playing decent teams now and still getting good results, which is great. When it was still 1-0 getting towards the end of the game I was thinking I know we've had all the possession but they're going to come up and score a scrappy goal.
We upped the pace a bit in the second half and when Dave brought on the three subs that shook things up and helped a lot. Calum's goal was one of the best since I've been playing for Canterbury. 4-0 game over.
We all went out that night and had a good laugh...good for team spirit...even the Doc was out for a bit of Chinese! A great night to finish off a great result. Let's hope it continues this week against Otford. We've never beaten them by much so it's going to be a tough one.
