We had been relishing the thought of playing against Hollands & Blair because I think they are the best team in the league; the team to beat and the one to aspire to. Unfortunately the weather beat both of us.
Our recent form has been good and I was delighted to bounce back from our defeat at Rusthall FC with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Cray Valley (PM). It was a solid performance and although not spectacular, very professional. Quite simply we got the job done and never looked like conceding a goal. The victory and three points were vital as they kept us amongst the chasing pack and in touch with the top three teams.
I feel that we are now starting to find our feet in this Division and a level of consistency that was missing at the start of the season. We are now a team that can beat anyone on our day and can compete with the best.
This year has been a good one for the club on and off the field. We secured our second League and Cup Double and continue to improve the depth and quality of the squad. Off the pitch our hard working Chairman and Committee are taking us closer to the day when we can have our own stadium in the city that will be the envy of most clubs in Kent. Our work in the community is thriving and I am delighted with the progress our Community Team has made, and very impressed with the success of our Learning Disabilities Team.
As we look forward to 2010 I predict we are about to enter an exciting phase in the club’s history. I hope the Step Six League does commence next season and very much want Canterbury City FC to be part of this new league, which would see us rise another level on the non-League pyramid. I would also hope to see building work start on the new stadium to see our ground aspirations move from a concept to a reality. This will provide the platform to greater success on the field as we seek to become a force to be reckoned with in Kent football.
Finally, I would like to thank the supporters and everyone associated with Canterbury City for the continued support I have received this year. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Yours in Sport: Dave Fairclough (First Team Manager)
