Under-16s press on (February 24, 2008) City U-16s extended their lead over their nearest rivals with a 3-2 victory over Sittingbourne. With Dover and Sheppey drawing 2-2, a win was crucial for the Canterbury team and they didn't disappoint.
Starting very brightly, they took the lead on 12 minutes when Glen Johnson tucked tha ball away after a fine through ball from Michael Walsh. However,Sittingbourne drew level when during a rare foray into the City box their forward was brought down by Anthony Searle. The resulting penalty was scored comfortably. On 32 minutes, however, City had a penalty of their own when a luckless defender handled the ball. Michael Walsh stepped up to score and put City into a 2-1 lead that they kept until half- time.
The second half was a more scrappy affair, City failing to find their fluent passing game but nonetheless they still extended their lead when Chris Axford was felled in the box for a further penalty that Walsh again stroked home confidently. The game was drawing to a close when Sittingbourne scored what proved to be no more than a consolation goal with one minute remaining.
Steve Woollcott said: "I was satisfied with the result as we never really looked under much pressure. We should have turned our possession into more goals and on another day might have scored five or six but the three points were well deserved against a really hard working Sittingbourne side. Two recent signings, Matt Biggs and Tony Gregory contributed well and will bring additonal strength in depth as we approach the final important games of the season."
