Big win for Under-16s (March 09, 2008) City's Under-16s comfortably won their home encounter with St Margaret's 5-0 today. All five goals were memorable.
City took the lead on five minutes when Blaine Gess, outstanding as ever at the back, struck a sweet volley after a corner was cleared to him on the edge of the box. The St Margaret's 'keeper had no chance as the ball, bouncing above waist height, was struck with great technique and venemous pace and was past him and bursting the net before he had a chance to react. The way the players celebrated this great goal showed that there couldn't have been a more popular scorer (even Blaine smiled).
City extended their lead when Chris Axford fired home from the edge of the box after Glen Johnson's shot was blocked, and then added a third when Robbie Egan fired home over the 'keeper with another sweetly struck volley from 20 yards.
St Margaret's rarely threatened but when they did get the ball into the City box Alex Treacher in the City goal displayed a safe pair of hands, as he has done all season, to snuff out any thoughts of a St Mags goal. The back four of Searle, Gess, Langiano, and Gregory stood firm to thwart most attacks and the tireless Callum Norton was busy throughout in midfield to break up play and protect the back four.
The second half bought two more quality goals. Adam Woollcott, having just brought out a great save from the 'keeper with a right footed shot from 25 yards, struck a drive from a similar distance with his left foot to find the top corner. Tony Gregory, making only his second appearance for the club, then joined the scorers, making a foraging run from left back that culminated in a shot which the 'keeper could only parry straight back into his path. Gregory returned it with interest, smashing it in to make it 5-0.
Steve Woollcott said: "I think the scoreline flattered us somewhat but I can't complain with the quality of our goals. In their own way they were all outstanding finishes and brought some favourable comments from the spectators. If we can keep winning this comfortably without hitting top gear I will be more than pleased".
