Big win for Reserves (March 23, 2008)

Sturry Reserves 3 City Reserves 8

Canterbury City’s Development squad, unbeaten in the last three games, turned on the flair yesterday at the Quarry Ground against Sturry Reserves.

Going 1-0 down in the first minute didn’t seem to bother the youngsters as they shrugged off the bad start and got down to it. Mark Vidler, who stepped up for the challenge of wearing the number 1 shirt, could do nothing about the first goal. Bad marking saw Sturry’s striker pick his spot and fire in the opener. It was not long until City got going. Some fine passing saw Karl Williams start off with one of his four goals on a cold Easter Saturday afternoon. Karl picked the ball up from a superb pass by Dan Woodward and fired the ball across the area and straight into the 'keepers bottom right hand corner.

Sturry took the lead again on 20 minutes, only for City to reply through Jason Anthony who took his goal well after some neat footwork near the half way line and fired in from 20 yards. Woodward gave City the lead on 33 minutes with a fine strike that hit the crossbar and Dan managed to collect the rebound to score his first goal for the Reserves. Dan had a fine game in the first half and showed at times some real class.

Williams scored his second goal just before the break, sending City in at half-time 4-2 in the lead. Another surging push forward from the City’s midfield and good passing sent Williams away to fire past the Sturry 'keeper. In the second half the wind was in our favour and we created more of the dominating football that we saw in the first half.

Williams collected two more goals to finish him on four for the day and Tom Clark pushed forward into the box to collect the loose ball after Williams had been fouled. Good refereeing let Clark go on and score his goal. Pick of the goals has to be from Sam Brown who fired in from 25 yards. Sam was part of the build-up, doing some great passing and with ball out wide a pass in field from John Lewis saw Brown collect the ball, go past two players and get into space and fire in to the 'keepers top left corner. Sam deserved that goal for the hard work that he had put into the game.

Not one player from City could be said to have had a bad game. Hard work and determination over the last couple of games have seen the side mature and get down to playing some really good football.
