Good runs ends (March 30, 2008) City Under-18s 2 Whitstable Town 5
City’s recent good run came to an end against a well-organised Whitstable Town. Having to play on a surface not compatible with City’s style meant that they struggled against a team playing the long ball game to their advantage.
Whitstable struck first after fifteen minutes when a long ball stretched the City defence. A well struck shot gave Mike Magrino, in the City goal, little
chance. City then went two down when an unchallenged defensive clearing header saw the Whitstable player plant the ball back into the City net. City stirred themselves and pulled back a goal after forty minutes when Aaron Campbell planted a firm header in from Jamie Maxted’s free-kick. Maxted then went close to equalising on half-time with a header that drifted wide of the upright. City started the second half pushing players forward, creating early openings but leaving themselves open to the counter-attack from which Whitstable added a third goal on fifty-eight minutes. City again responded, with substitute James Turner striding on to his twin brother Michael’s through ball to fire home to make the score 3-2. With City pressurising the Whitstable defence, a debatable refereeing decision then proved decisive. With James Turner shadowing the ball on the right side of the pitch, he had his ankles clipped but the referee waved play on and the Whitstable player was away on his own to strike a shot under Magrino.
City continued to press and conceded a fifth goal, again on the break. The Whitstable player's attempt at a shot went across the area and fell to a team-mate who converted from close in.
