Williams inspires Reserves (April 06, 2008)

Canterbury City Reserves 3 Sturry Reserves 2

Another win for the Development Squad last Wednesday evening at Bridge against a spirited Sturry Reserves. Sturry arrived with just with 11 men and were soon behind when Karl Williams struck a fine goal. Good work through the midfield saw the Sturry’s defence opened up and Williams took the ball around the 'keeper to put City in the lead.

It was not long before City pushed on and extended the lead when Jason Anthony fired in to give the home side a commanding 2-0 lead. Sturry found the pace of the game difficult and bad tackles were coming in to try and halt City’s progress. A two-footed challenge on Mark Vidler saw his game finish early and Adam Solly came on to assist in the defence.

City’s third goal came from some good passing and pace on the ball in which Williams took advantage and slotted City’s third goal under the 'keeper. Before the break, Sturry opened up their account after a lapse in the defence’s concentration. Adrian Gower was beaten with a fine strike.

Sturry raised their game and took the fight to City with some good breaks that were eventually broken down by a determined defence. Sturry’s second goal came with some unintentional  help from City defender Ben Haswell who had to head the ball back to the 'keeper but gave Gower no chance of collecting the ball which ran into the open net.

City held on as Sturry tried their best to come back and get an equaliser. City did break through late on and Williams was set free to go one on one with the 'keeper who took him off his feet and ended his game early.  Light was fading fast and city held the lead to the end to go four games unbeaten.

City: Gower; Vidler, Solly (35), Brockman, Haswell (60). S. Johnson, Dodd, Clark, P.Johnson, Angels, Lewis (45), Woollcott, Anthony, K. Williams.
