Under-18s through to semi-final (April 09, 2008) Tonbridge Angels Under-18s 2 City Under-18s 4
City's Under-18s travelled to Tonbridge for this John Ullman Cup quarter-final and won a hard-fought match to take them into the last four against Maidstone at Canterbury High School on Aoril 12.
City started slowly and found Tonbridge testing their defence straight away. They were lucky not to concede when a Tonbridge forward found himself through on goal, only to pull his shot wide. City soon came into the game and James Turner got on the end of a long ball but his shot was well blocked by the home goalkeeper.
City took the lead when Jamie Maxted turned on the edge of the area and shot across the 'keeper into the bottom corner. However, Tonbridge soon replied with another long ball which was lobbed over the advancing 'keeper.
The second half saw City step up a gear and they scored again when a corner went through a crowd of players for Maxted to poke the ball in. Although Tonbridge always looked dangerous on the break, City were now starting to play really well and added a third goal when James Turner's shot went under the unfortunate 'keeper. City then added a fourth. Michael Turner's half volley, with the outside of his foot, proved too powerful for the 'keeper and it curled inside the post.
Tonbridge never gave up and battled to the end, being rewarded with their second after a goalmouth scramble. Click here to return to the News page
