Winder injury mars fine win (April 13, 2008)

Under-18s 4 Maidstone United 2

City added three further points in their league campaign beating Maidstone United at Bridge on Sunday.Playing with confidence after their cup win and with a reshuffled team due to player unavailability, City sprayed the ball about and had two goals disallowed for offside before taking the lead on twenty minutes.

Mike Turner, pressurising his full back near the corner flag, won the ball and whipped in a cross to the near post where Jamie Maxted, who was skipper for the day after his performance in midweek, shot home at the second attempt.City should have added a second almost immediately when James Turner was brought down by the Maidstone 'keeper but Calum McGeehan`s spot kick was saved.

James Turner added a second on thirty minutes, volleying home from 18 yards after Jack Winder`s headed pass. City then sat back and paid the penalty when Maidstone pulled a goal back with a low shot at the near post which eluded keeper Mike Magrino. City reacted and bought two fine saves out of the Maidstone 'keeper before half-time.

City started the second half well but lost winger Jack Winder to injury after ten minutes when going into a fifty-fifty challenge. Both players initially got up but went down almost immediately.Winder's injury was later confirmed as a broken leg. Following on from a highly charged game early in the season, City players were then subjected to bouts of foul language, spitting and physical threats from people and players on the touchline.

With City losing concentration, Maidstone equalised with a cross-shot past Magrino almost immediately. Regaining their composure, City reacted as they have done several times this season by putting passes together with Mike Turner splitting the defence for his twin brother to slot home under the advancing 'keeper. City had further chances to add to the scoreline before Kye Westgarth added a fourth killer goal on 80 minutes, shooting home at the far post from McGeehan`s corner.
