City stamp their mark (April 13, 2008)

Post Office 3 City Reserves 6

City Reserves were offered a Friendly at the weekend against the Post Office who are high flyers in Division 2 at the top of the table.

The game was fairly contested, with City taking the lead after 10 minutes when Jason Anthony was gifted the ball from the 'keeper who dropped it. The ball fell to Anthony to tap across the line. This was one goal that Jason was sure not to miss, although we all held our breath as we know his misses this year have been a little too frustrating.

Post Office fought back and soon levelled the score through some poor defending. It was not long before City knew what type of fight they were in when once again the defence was cut open and Post Office took the lead. City started to stabilize and the ball was passed around with more belief and more determination not to be beaten by a team that were in a lower division. They got their equaliser when Mark Vidler's corner kick was sent in to a crowded area and John Lewis, arriving at the far post,  headed the ball down in to the net.

The second half saw much better football from City. They dominated the midfield and created some good chances. They knuckled down and moved the ball around the pitch and pressured the Post Office defence. Another corner taken by Vidler saw Lewis rise above his marker and send City into the lead. Sam Brown worked hard all day and was rewarded with a fine goal when the ball was crossed in from the left and Brown headed the ball past the 'keeper.

The team started to work well. In and the defence Jamie Brockman and Gary Dodd kept Post Office at bay. City were in a winning mood when once again a corner taken by Vidler was sent in and it missed everyone. The ball went straight inside the far post but the referee saw an infringement and disallowed the goal. A few minutes later, Vidler took his fourth corner of the game, this time from the right, and Lewis once again beat everyone in the air to complete his hat-trick.

Post Office came back with another goal after a mix up between the defence and 'keeper. At 5-3 City could have been easing off to a comfortable win but with only one minute John Lewis picked the ball up just inside the 18 yard box, turned and set him self up for a looping shot that gave the Post Office 'keeper no chance of saving.

Post Office gave City a good game and were probably one of the better teams we have come up against for a long time.

Squad: Gower, Vidler, Brockman, S Johnson, Dodd, Woodward, Haswell, P Johnson, Brown, Antony, Biznar, Lewis
