City Ladies press on (April 20, 2008) Castle Colts Reserves 0 City Ladies 10
City's Ladies continued their seemingly unstoppable progress towards promotion with a comfortable victory over a Castle Colts side that had only three shots at goal and would have suffered an even heavier defeat had it not been for some excellent goalkeeping.
This was yet another game in which City did not have to extend themselves too much to come away with three points. It took them ten minutes to get into their stride but from then on it was a procession towards the Castle Colts goal.
Manager Lorna Shilling employed a slightly different formation from usual. Top scorer Debbie Burgess played deeper and so had fewer opportunities to get on the score-sheet, but this gave others the chance to add to City's impressive goals total, not least Sam Berry, who scored a second half hat-trick. However, City's most impressive player was Avril Spary, whose first touch and passing from the left side was outstanding.
It was Spary who sparked City into life after ten minutes when she controlled the ball well, turned and shot inside the far post. City then began to play some good, flowing football that led to a fine goal when a cross by Burgess was driven in by Debbie Blackmore, who also hit the crossbar. The Castle Colts 'keeper did well to turn away several more shots before Vicky Fusco, playing as the lead striker, chased in a loose ball.
Natalie Farbrace's successful long shot took City into a 4-0 interval lead which was extended without difficulty during the second half. Berry scored her first with a fierce shot before Natalie Bowen sent a perfect pass to Burgess, who drove in her only goal of the day (an unusual occurence).
Spary took City into a 7-0 lead, Berry scored two more and subsitute Carmela Emekwue added another. As one of the Castle Colts players said: "They should be in a different league". The moment to make that come true should not be far off.
