Under-18s also in a Cup Final (April 23, 2008) City Under-18s 5 Maidstone United 2
City followed the First team`s lead by qualifying for a Cup Final in their own right in the John Ullman Floodlight Cup at Canterbury High School on Wednesday in the semii-final.
Starting slowly, City found themselves under early pressure surviving early attacks on their goal before starting to put passes together themselves and taking the lead on 20 minutes. Winning a corner on the left, Rob Paton rose at the far post to head back across goal where Troy Smisson reacted first to fire home.
City continued to press and went close before a fierce strike by Jamie Maxted added a second goal in the 27th minute. With the defence cutting out many of Maidstone`s attacks, Under-16 'keeper Alex Treacher, in for the unavailable Mike Magrino, was rarely troubled but pulled out one excellent stop when called upon.
Right on half-time City increased their lead with Dean Brockman firing home a penalty after Michael Turner was pulled down in the area. City were put under pressure early in the second half and conceded a goal on 50 minutes after failing to clear their lines . With their confidence up, Maidstone put City on the back foot but breaking down an attack City attacked swiftly with Maxted outpacing the Maidstone defenders to slip the ball under the 'keeper to restore City`s three goal lead.
Again Maidstone responded and with City starting to sit back,an attack down the left flank saw an early ball in and low strike finish to bring the score back to 4-2 in the 73rd minute. City again raised their game, creating opportunities before Maxted completed a hat-trick on 82 minutes, shooting home after Troy Smisson`s initial shot was blocked .
City now play either Welling United or Crockenhill in the final.
