City Ladies are Champions (May 04, 2008)

Fulston Zebras 1 City Ladies 5

City's Ladies completed a magnificent weekend for the club when overcoming a much improved Fulston Zebras side to secure the league championship title.  This came after the senior men's team had won the Kent Junior Cup (Group) A Final (see separate report).

The Ladies now have their only their double-header against Crockenhill tomorrow to complete the league season unbeaten.  Yesterday, they were never in serious danger of being denied their celebration but the Zebras gave them a much more testing game than in the first meeting earlier in the season.

Although it took City only six minutes to score their opening goal with a shot from Becky Scott, they were not altogether at ease in the midfield area. And when the so reliable Sarah Hardy made an almost unique hash of clearing the ball just inside the penalty area, Fulston were gift-wrapped an equaliser.

Debbie Burgess worked enormously hard in this oppressively warm afternoon but rarely had that sparkle of so many earlier performances.  Part of that was because the Zebras closed in on her in numbers.  However, she laid on City's second goal.  A shot bounced back of the 'keeper and Jenny Collins snapped it back in.  Burgess chipped the ball over the 'keeper for City's third after the Zebras expected a free-kick and held back.

After half-time manager Lorna Shilling got the midfield area sorted.  Substitute Georgie Tricker, looking sharp, and sent over a corner to the near post.  The 'keeper made an attempt to palm it away but only helped it in.

Avril Spary, who has been outstanding in so many games, completed City's successful afternoon by hitting in a splendid shot left to right and inside the far post.

It was not a memorable performance but a day to remember in the short history of the new Canterbury City FC.

City (squad): Hardy; Farbrace, Collins, Fusco, Smith, Bowen, Scott, Blackmore, Spary, Smith, Burgess (subs: Berry, Emekwue, Tricker)
