Disappointing end to Ladies season (May 05, 2008) Crockenhill 0 Canterbury City 0 Canterbury City 3 Crockenhill 0
One of the attractions of following City Ladies this season has been the hospitable atmosphere and welcome afforded to the club and its officials by every home team we have visited. It is therefore a great shame that for our final visit of the season we had to visit Crockenhill who despite having a pleasant manager and a tidy, well organised team have an odious and unpleasant group of spectators who do their club, and the Ladies game in general a great disservice.
On the field of play Crockenhill have a number of talented young players, and with City still recovering from Sunday’s hard fought win at Fulston, the first encounter was a tight affair. Although dominating possession, City created few chances although both Debbie Burgess and Carmela Emekwue can consider themselves unlucky not to break the deadlock.
The second game was a more open affair as the burning sun challenged the fitness levels of all concerned. Five minutes into the game Burgess stroke home from close distance following some excellent work by Emekwue. From there on the game was never in doubt and on twenty minutes City doubled their lead as the impressive Emekwue struck home, this time after an assist from Burgess.
City continued to press forward in the second half, thwarted by some last ditch defending and impressive goalkeeping. With legs tiring, it was no surprise when Burgess hit home her second and City’s third of the game.
The final whistle brought to an end a glorious season for Lorna Shilling and her squad and with promotion up the pyramid secure, we can already look forward to an exciting season ahead. And fortunately, no visit to Crockenhill.
