Special needs-GF\\\\\\\\The football club has become fully involved in helping special needs children from across the local community. On Saturday mornings in the Body and Mind gymnasium at Canterbury High School, Tony Newington conducts football coaching sessions which are based on giving the children the maximum fun with achievable targets of progress.

Whenever their club commitments allow, City FC coaches and some Special needs-GF\\\\\\\\players call in to the Saturday “All Stars Club” to assist Tony. All have received training and are fully qualified to work with the children, for whom the fun of football is clear to see. One parent explained: “My son looks forward to the session all week. In fact even on a Monday he starts asking if it’s Saturday yet”.

Eleven-year-old Ben, who has Cerebral Palsy, wrote in a City FC programme: “I love coming to football training. We always warm up properly first, then practice our footwork and ball-skills. We then play a short game and we all get a chance to go in goal. It gives my parents a chance to meet up with other parents”.

Ben’s uncle said: “Tony has an excellent rapport with all the players and they obviously benefit from his time and patience”.
The Saturday sessions are between 10.00am and 11.15am.
PLEASE NOTE: There are no sessions on 12 April and 3rd May.

SNAAP Sports Club

On alternate Fridays the football club also sends one or two of its coaches to SNAAP (Special Needs Advisory and Activities Project) Sports Club at the Canterbury High School. The SNAAP Sports Club is designed to help the children with their social skills as well as giving them supervised exercise.

Carrie Johnson, the Project Manager, said: “The Sports Club is for children aged eight upwards who have a disability or special need. We are currently looking for children who are interested in joining a football team, to be coached by Canterbury City FC. The club is from 4.00 to 6.00pm but children don’t have to attend the whole session. If they want they can just come in for the football part”.

Paula Richardson, whose eight year-old son Toby is a permanent wheelchair user, said: “Toby hardly has any opportunities to exercise, have fun and socialise with other young people. The SNAAP Sports Club gives him the chance to enjoy all of these in an understanding and non-judgemental environment. I only wish it was more often”.

September 2007 - School Visits A Big Hit

The Canterbury City MegaBall was a welcome visitor as the club ran fun sessions at local Primary Schools.

Canterbury City Special Needs F.C. – Taster Sessions

On the 2nd & 9th of June a team  of professionals braced themselves for the first ever C.C.F.C. Special Needs training session.

Countless amounts of flyers, newspaper articles, and DVD’s were strategically distributed amongst schools and youth clubs to entice youngsters with special needs, to attend a couple of fully inclusive football sessions.

The numbers were slightly disappointing, however ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’ and those who did turn up enjoyed themselves and are thoroughly looking forward to the start of next season.

Special thanks to John and the Maidstone team for their help and guidance, and to all the C.C.F.C. coaches.

 Happy training- Tony

Special Needs Family Activity Day at Chilham Castle

Canterbury City Special Needs F.C. was invited to Chilham Castle to run inclusive coaching sessions for children and their families with hemiplegia. The day was organised by the charity hemi- help (www.hemihelp.org.uk) who organise events across the U.K. promoting activities and clubs similar to C.C.F.C. who can really improve a childs & their families development through inclusive sport.

The football sessions were organised by C.C.F.C. Special Needs coach Tony Newington and Tony Old of Swale Youth Projects. Over 200 children attended the event, participating in activites such as swimming, cricket, fishing all of which were made completly inclusive and very enjoyable.
